Featured OER Activities for Your Fall Curriculum
We’re excited to introduce you to three teachers and showcase the amazing activities they shared with the Pathways Project Community!
Stefanie Ratzlaff participated in the spring 2023 Pathways Project Research cohort and remixed a Spanish Level 1 activity on family!
Why did you revise this interpersonal speaking activity?
I revised this activity to make the language more appropriate for novice high school students and to provide more scaffolding.
How does this interpretive activity prepare students for the speaking activity that follows?
Students will receive Comprehensible Input about family members, family structure and family activities. The input will prepare them to talk to their classmates about their own families.
Kylene Butler completed WORLD 510, part of the Boise State CALL graduate certificate, during summer 2023. She created three new activities:
French Level 4 activity on Vacation:
In this activity, students will read an article about factors to consider when renting a vacation property. Then, they will compare lists with a partner or in a small group to come to a consensus on the five most important factors. Students will work together to find a vacation rental in a francophone area that incorporates their considerations and will present their choice to the class. As a possible extension on this activity, students can choose an accommodation and write a mock review of the accommodation.
French Level 4 activity on Advertising:
In this activity, students will examine advertisements in French. They will also collaborate to develop an advertising campaign to sell prom tickets at their school. This activity will target all three modes of communication.
French Level 4 activity on Inventions and Innovations:
In this activity, students will read an article and create a visual representation of the differences between inventions and innovations. Then, they will choose between two emails to write: one to propose a solution to a global problem and the other to ask questions of a student inventor.
Omar Ponce Vera participated in the spring 2023 Pathways Project Research cohort and remixed a Spanish Level 1 activity on Free Time and Hobbies!
Why did you revise this interpersonal speaking activity?
I thought the activity needed more language supports for students at a basic level in proficiency. I also incorporated an authentic material that provides students with a better cultural understanding of what people from the target culture does for pastimes and hobbies.
How does this activity prepare students for the speaking task that follows?
This activity allows students to take a quick peek at what is culturally relevant in Mexico City in regards to hobbies and how young adults spend their free time. Most of the vocabulary used in the video has been used in class before which will facilitate the conversation portion of the lesson. Another goal of the video is for students to start making connections in writing about activities that they like doing in their free time. By writing down what they hear, students start building a vocabulary bank that will be useful as we progress in the lesson.
